Meet Javier Fernández
A member of the Florida House of Representatives since 2018, Javier Fernandez is a native of South Florida with a commitment to building consensus and delivering results for our community. Throughout his career, he has worked in both the public and private sector to move his community forward.
Javier is the oldest of four siblings raised in western Miami-Dade. He attended St. Theresa School and Christopher Columbus High School where he played football before earning a full academic scholarship to attend Colby College in Maine. Following his service as an advocate in the non-profit sector and chief of staff to the mayor of Miami, Javier went on to study law at the University of Miami, where he graduated with honors while working part-time.
In his law practice, Javier represented clients advocating for transformative projects across Miami such as the Miami Design District, Brickell City Centre, Miami Worldcenter, and the Tri-Rail commuter rail service.
Raised in a single-parent household, Javier understands the struggles of balancing work and family. As the son of a Miami-Dade Public Schools teacher of 41 years, Javier firmly believes access to quality, public education is fundamental to a dynamic economy and combating our community’s growing income inequality.
In 2018, Javier won a special election in May in House District 114, where he was elected to a full term 6 months later in November. As a member of the Florida House, Javier has worked tirelessly to fund our public schools, overhaul our crumbling infrastructure, support our local economy, and combat climate change. In the State Senate, Javier will prioritize state investment in transportation and affordable housing to address both of these growing crises that threaten our quality of life. He will continue fighting for sensible gun laws and bold solutions to the climate crisis, both issues that put our community’s safety and security at risk.
Javier and his wife, Dr. Anna Maria Patiño-Fernández, a clinical psychologist, have been married for 13 years. They have two children — Susanna (10) and Lucas (8) — and consider themselves blessed to be raising their family in South Florida.
